How to protect the fence from corrosion

Humidity and precipitation adversely affect the metal, and if protection measures are not taken, then rust will very quickly render the fence unusable. If, with proper maintenance, metal structures are designed up to 40 years of operation, then without processing the fence will not last more than 5-6 years. Of course, the quality of the metal and the design of the fence play a large role. A fence assembled from individual fragments will rust much faster than a monolithic structure. They provoke corrosion mainly in the places of fastening and welding, where moisture accumulates. Salt is also an enemy of metal, and if the fence is located near the roadway, which is sprinkled with salt, then the likelihood of corrosion increases greatly.

To extend the life of the metal the fence, prevention is needed, the basis of which is surface treatment. Work must be carried out depending on operating conditions, but at least once every three years.
The basis for protecting a metal surface is of course high-quality painting. But this is the final stage, and before that it is necessary to carefully prepare the foundation. If the metal is new, then it is treated with a solvent and then coated with a layer of diluted primer.

Much more will have to tinker with the old surface, because if after cleaning it remains rust, carbon deposits, grease or old paint, this will nullify all your efforts. Therefore, you will need a metal brush and a cleaning solvent. More and more difficulties arise with the old paint, in order to completely remove it, they use the burning method and use a solvent.

Sometimes there is no need to remove completely old paint if there are no blisters and cracks under it. Then the surface is simply sanded and primed open areas. Then they check for compatibility new and old paints, painting a small area. If after drying no defects are observed, then everything is fine, you can paint.

The choice of the coloring material is of great importance, because acrylic paints, as well as enamels and varnishes on an alkyd basis are best suited to preserve the metal. Materials that are applied directly to rust are also popular. This significantly reduces maintenance time, as there is no need for laborious mechanical cleaning.

It is necessary to deal with a metal fence from the moment of its installation, conducting regular maintenance and trying to prevent premature corrosion. Then the fence will serve the due time and even longer.
