What to choose columns for a fence

How to choose fence posts How to choose fence posts

Whatever type of fence you choose, one of the main parts of the design is the support posts, the strength and durability of the fence depend on them. Therefore, before deciding on the construction of the fence, you need to know what are the pillars for the fence , what is the advantage and disadvantage of each species and after that make a conclusion which are best suited for your fence.

Support poles are made of various materials, and they must be selected depending on the purpose of the fence.
The easiest way, of course, is to use wooden poles, it is easy to work with them and you can use them in many cases. But it is clear that wood is not the best material for long-term use. Even if you treat wooden poles with the best antiseptic, impregnate with bitumen and paint with the most waterproof paint, such supports will not last longer than 8 - 10 years. They are best used for temporary fences, small front gardens and internal fences.

Today, asbestos-cement pipes are often used as supporting pillars. They really combine a lot of positive qualities, do not rot, quite durable and technological, also quite affordable. As a disadvantage, such pipes are exposed to the external environment and in severe frosts can become unusable. There are also problems with fastening, it is not advisable to make metal fences based on them, but for wooden fences and installation on netting clamps, this is a very good option.

Pillars made of brick are very beautiful and look solid, but very expensive and require a lot of labor, and then, they need a very solid foundation. Such pillars do not have wide practical application, since they are more decorative. Concrete poles are used more, they are cheaper and last longer than brick.

Plastic pipes are also gaining popularity. They are used in the construction of polycarbonate fences, wooden and plastic fences. They are lightweight, convenient for installation, resistant to weathering, do not deteriorate and do not rust. But precisely because they are light and poorly tolerated by mechanical influences, they are usually not used for capital fences.

The most popular were and remain metal supports for fences. This material is the most technologically advanced, most durable and reliable. And most importantly, metal poles are suitable for almost any type of fence. Most often, profile metal pipes of various sections are used. For the sake of economy, sometimes a hot-rolled corner or channel is installed as support pillars, but they significantly lose strength to pipes, so such a saving is very doubtful. However, for fences made of welded wire mesh or netting, channels and corners will work well.
Of course, iron pipes have many shortcomings, and first of all, this is susceptibility to corrosion and the need for constant care - cleaning, painting, etc. Therefore, it makes sense to use more reliable galvanized pipes in this regard.
