Paper Origin History

The need and invention of paper arose with the advent of writing. First paper production began about 3,500 years ago in ancient Egypt. Egyptians made papyrus. The core of the papyrus was the reed core, which was cut into thin strips, and then soaked in water so that all soluble substances came out of the fibers. The next step was rolling out these strips with a rolling pin, in order to get rid of moisture, and again soaked for about a day, this procedure lasted several days. When the strips became transparent and turned creamy, they were placed under a press, then dried and smoothed using stone. Papyrus was very expensive due to the complexity of production. Another disadvantage was its fragility. Could almost completely abandon papyrus only in the X century.

In the II century BC was invented parchment. Its homeland is the Asia Minor city of Pergamum, actually from there the name. Parchment was made from the skin of a young animal: goat, lamb, calf, donkey. Parchment, in comparison with papyrus, was more durable and stronger. Also on parchment could be written on both sides.

Since the manufacture of parchment was a very complex and time-consuming process, the price of it was extremely high. Sometimes, in order not to buy new parchment, the text was washed off from the old and reused.

Of course paper production these days is very different, and its production principle was invented in China in 105 AD. This date is considered to be the start time of paper production. The creator of the paper production method was Cai Lun.

Any plant material or even waste, such as straw, moss, rags, could be used to make paper. The principle of production was that the fibers of the paper material were separated and diluted with water until a very liquid suspension was obtained. Then, from this suspension, sheets of material were produced that had previously passed the stages of pressing or dehydration and drying. For long-term storage, the finished paper was impregnated with special substances.

Outside of China, paper began to be produced only closer to 800 in Samarkand, then in Baghdad, Cairo, and Venice.

In Europe, paper appeared even later. In the X century, the first paper mills were built in Spain.

Then paper production appeared in France, England, Holland, Germany, Poland and came to Muscovite Russia.

Of course, a huge contribution to the development of paper production occurred with the invention of the printing press. A a paper machine was made in the middle of the 19th centurywhich worked for the most parton the machine.

How to make paper at home yourself

Making paper at home with your own hands is quite simple.

The advantage of making paper at home is that in this way you can recycle and “give new life” to paper, old receipts, newspapers, and old notebooks that are already used and unsuitable for work. From all this, you can create a new blank sheet of paper.

First step: paper preparation.

• Cut or tear the paper into small pieces.
• Soak the pieces of paper in water for several hours, preferably all night.

Second step: pulp production.

• To make paper, you need a more or less uniform mass. Therefore, you need to chop soaked pieces of paper as best as possible. You can use a blender for this.
• Take some paper and add water to the blender to make the process easier and faster, so as not to burn the appliance. Grind until smooth.

Third step: sheet formation.

• This will require some form. You can make it from two frames, on one of which you need to strengthen a shallow network for draining water.
• Then fold the frames together and scoop up water with sheets of paper shredded by a blender. Allow excess moisture to drain, and then turn the sheet on a flat surface with some absorbent material: towels, cloth, etc. Carefully remove the frame.
• Cover the sheet with the same material on which you put it and pat it with a sponge.

Fourth step: press.

• It is necessary to rid the sheet of paper of the remaining moisture, and thereby further compress it.
• You can use a heavy load for this purpose, evenly distributed on the surface, or you can use the roller and walk along the surface of the sheet.

Fifth step: drying.

• Lay the sheets on a flat surface. And leave to dry for 1-3 days. Drying time depends on moisture level and paper thickness.
