Fencing the territory in the countryside or on a suburban area is a practical necessity, but this does not mean that it should be in the form of a gray and dull fence. Lovers of the beautiful landscape have always strived for excellence, creating various hedge species. In the 18th century, this type of fencing became very popular and today has turned into a real art.

A hedge is not only beautiful, it also serves as a normal fence, protecting from wind, dust and noise. In addition, the fence from living plants creates a special atmosphere and a favorable microclimate on the site or in the garden. To make a hedge, labor, knowledge and constant care of plants are necessary, although it does not require large financial costs. Green fences can be grown artificially or used in their natural form.

The types of hedges are divided mainly by height: this is a type of living wall about three meters high, a simple hedge, usually from a meter to three tall and a meter or less curb.

Slow-growing and densely branched breeds of low-growing plants are well suited for the border. Usually they are planted on the borders of lawns and terraces, as well as as a path fence. They can consist of freely growing plants, such as Erica, polyanthus rose, magonia holly and others. Molded borders are grown from various types of honeysuckle, boxwood, Japanese euonymus and similar plants.

Hedges of medium height are grown from shade-tolerant, slow-growing species, which have dense shoots with small leaves and good branching. Therefore, a noble laurel, different types of arborvitae, hawthorn, buckthorn and other plants of this type are well suited for them.
If you make a hedge of freely growing plants, you need to choose rocks with decorative qualities, such as pyracantha, chubushnik, barberry, currant and others.

Living walls are usually grown at the borders of the site to protect it from wind, dust and noise. For them, hornbeam, spruce, hazel are best, and for very tall ones, an apple tree, dogwood, hawthorn.
The most effective multi-tiered hedges, which consist of two to three, and sometimes more breeds.

Before planting the fence, you must decide which type is best for you, unshaped or molded. Each species has its own characteristics and rules of care. Molded hedges must be constantly sheared. With the unformed, it’s a little easier, you don’t need to cut them, but constant care is also necessary. Removing dry branches, faded old inflorescences, extra shoots - all this must be done constantly so as not to start the hedge.

Also, hedges make multi-row and single-row. It all depends on the planting order. In single-row they are planted at a certain distance in one line, and in multi-row in a checkerboard pattern or "net". In one and the other case, you can plant different types of plants, the main thing is to maintain the overall harmony of your landscape design. The alternation of plants in a single-row hedge should be proportional, that is, the same plants should be repeated, otherwise it will no longer look like a hedge.
