How do forged fences

Of course, it’s not at all easy to make a forged fence yourself, but the task is not as impossible as it seems at first glance.
Forged fences can be divided into three types: decorative, protective and combined. The assembly of the fence itself is not complicated, it is easiest with protective fences, where all the elements of the section are connected by welding and then mounted on supporting poles. Fixing the decorative sections is also not difficult, the problem is to make them. Beautiful art forging must be ordered from the master, and this is not very cheap, so it’s better to focus on the combined version, that is, an ordinary protective fence with decorative elements. Such a fence, with the necessary tools, can be made independently.

The first step is to draw a sketch and prepare the foundation. From the sketch, you will see what the foundation should be, you need to choose what the pillars will be, usually they are made of brick or concrete, metal ones can be, it depends on the overall design. The foundation is laid traditional, columnar or tape, only the latter, it is still desirable to strengthen the reinforced frame. It is important that the columns are placed exactly at the calculated distance and strictly vertically, any error will lead to a skew of the structure.

Round or faceted metal rods will be necessary for the fence, and the latter are better suited for decorative elements. For each section, a frame is made, do it on a flat surface so that no part sags. Then, vertical peaks are carefully inserted into the frames.

For the manufacture of decorative elements, you will need special equipment for cold forging. A beginner can make simple curls or openwork spirals. When you gain experience and master the technique, it will be possible to make other, more complex patterns. In order not to get confused with small details, lay them out inside the frame to see the whole picture. When all the parts are ready, do not fasten them immediately “tightly”, but simply grip them slightly by welding, so that in case of which you could correct them. When you put everything together and make sure that the elements “sit” where necessary, turn the section over and weld firmly.

After welding, the view from the fence will not be very presentable, but do not worry, all minor flaws will disappear under a layer of paint. Before painting, grind the surface with a grinder and a metal brush, make sure that there is no rust and small debris. Do not forget to degrease metal surfaces with a solvent.
