If you have long dreamed of creating a barbecue with your own hands, then here it is your happiness. I was lucky on the last day of my friend’s work in a bakery, a 200-liter barrel, which came in handy. Now it's time to get started!
1. Preparation
First, I cleaned the insides of the barrel of honey and washed it from the inside (not an attractive sight for photographing). Then I borrowed a grinder from a friend and cut a hole.
With a food barrel, much less trouble. Imagine a barbecue from a barrel of fuel oil or gasoline. Phew!
2. Build a stand
I needed to make a foundation, and there were only old metal pipes around, previously used as fence posts, which I could not throw in the trash and a little plywood for the room in the basement.
I cut 6 props of different lengths from the pipes - 2 pieces the length of a barrel, and 4 pieces for the legs. I wanted the barbecue to be portable, so the best thing was to put the barrel on the stand.
Two props held the barrel in a horizontal position, and 4 legs were attached to the props along the edges using bolts passed through the drilled holes.
To strengthen the legs, I inserted them into pieces of plywood. Set the barrel on top, and she stood there proudly and high.
3. Lid and grill mounting
I strengthened the brackets to keep the grill and lid from falling inward, as well as a lower stand to hold the coals and allow air to circulate.
Make sure that the brackets and hinges are made of stainless steel.
If you purchase galvanized parts, you must first burn them in order to immediately burn off the fumes that will occur during the first use of such parts in the grill.
4. Firing from the inside
I lit a fire inside to burn the inner coating, paint, or anything else that was processing the barrel.
5. Final touches
The finishing touches are the following design: a handle (a simple wooden handle from a hardware store), air vents and a temperature gauge.
I also decided to paint the barrel with refractory paint. In addition to the barrel acquiring a slightly different color, the paint also protects it from rust. It remains only to check the barrel in action.
